The Island Crematorium

Date: 2005 – 2006.

Declan Brassil & Co. was appointed by Strikemount Ltd. to provide planning services for the development of a crematorium facility, spiritual space and family areas, accommodated within a refurbished 19th century navy magazine building on Rocky Island in Cork Harbour. The development was granted permission by Cork County Council and An Bord Pleanala in 2006. The facility, the first of its kind outside of Dublin, provides a sensitive reuse of the historic magazine fort to provide crematorium services for the southern region and represents a landmark project for Cork and the Munster region.

In preparing for the planning application and appeals process, DBCL managed a multi-disciplinary team including conservation and environmental impacts, all of which were addressed by a multi-disciplinary team including award winning architects Magee Creedon Architects (Masterplanning, Design, Architecture & Landscape Architecture); Arup Consulting Engineers (Infrastructure and Traffic Engineers); Coughlan & Associates (Historic Building Consultants); and TMS Environment (Environmental Consultants). The Rocky Island site presented complex site selection, conservation, environmental design, and planning issues which were comprehensively addressed within the planning application documentation and responses to third party appeal statements.

Magee Creedon Architects were awarded the prestigious Opus Heritage Award and Opus Art in Architecture commendation in 2007 for the Project.
